Thursday Thought #6

We are beginning to pay attention to the messages we send ourselves, when we make a mistake, or something feels challenging and we just don't know it yet. Messages can be positive or negative.

In class we will be working on paying attention to the messages we send ourselves and trying to reframe negative thoughts into more positive ones.

Thursday Thought #5

THANK YOU to the chaperones who were able to join us on our field trip today. Although mother nature didn't cooperate 100% the children were so well behaved, seemed to have fun and learn a few things.

Be sure to visit the Plimoth Plantation Website for support as you work through the Plimoth Project.

Thursday Thought #4

Plimoth Plantation Here We Come!

We have been busy learning about the Wampanoag tribe, the first people who lived in the southern part of Massachusetts.

The following video clips provide a glimpse of our Plimoth Plantation visit. Your child may enjoy watching them at home.

Thursday Thought #3

We are kicking off our Engineering by Design projects with what has become known as The Global Cardboard Challenge. Students have begun thinking of their own independent designs for games made out of cardboard and few other recycled materials. Tomorrow groups will meet together to collaborate, share ideas and work together to design the game they will create on Wednesday October 18. Check in with your child about what they might need. As a class we could use adult scissors(labeled with your name on it) and packing tape.

Be sure to check out the videos about Caine's Arcade, the inspiration for the challenge.

Thursday Thought #2(on Friday)

We are beginning to learn a little bit about our brains and how they work with the goal being to foster the idea of a growth mindset . It all starts with the belief that you can learn anything! This short video clip will certainly get you thinking about your own personal learning.

Thursday Thought!

We have been working hard on practicing our listening skills. We use the term Whole Body Listening to remind each other how listening is more than just hearing with your ears.

How Would You Solve This Problem?

What fun we had watching this video about being stuck on an escalator. While the solution is so simple to the outsider, it is a reminder that we can get ourselves stuck when we find our selves getting our of the "green zone" or not remaining calm. The message--whenever possible take action to solve the problem on your own. Each day we encourage our 3rd graders to stop, think and become more independent. In class we are going to refer to this video when students have simple problems that could be solved on their own--such as not having a pencil, not getting a paper...

CREATE (Your Own Homework)

The kids are challenged to create their own homework this week. There will be no formal math or spelling homework....yet reading nightly is still expected.

The goal is to spend a little time each night (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) on some type of homework. It can be a "project" or something different each night. Homework can be turned in electronically or as a "hard copy" each day or at the end of the week.

Have fun!!!! Let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to comment to this blog post with questions or comments related to the homework.
