Welcome to Room 9

Dear Families,
I would like to formally welcome you to third grade and room 9. I am so excited to work with you throughout your child’s learning process in 3rd grade.
Here are a few “nuts and bolts” which may be helpful to know as we progress through the news year. Many of these will be repeated in notices as the year progresses.

Class blog: The class webpage can be accessed from the Happy Hollow website. There are numerous links to support and extend your child’s learning at home. At times there will be homework assigned utilizing the blog.

Friday Folders: Corrected work will be sent home on Fridays in your child’s Friday Folder and initial on the tan paper that you have looked at its contents. More importantly, please try to find 5 minutes to jot a quick note in response to your child’s Friday letter. It means the world to them.

Conferences/Report Cards: Watch for an email. The electronic organizer Volunteerspot will be used. Conferences will be held on the following Wednesday afternoons October 2, 9, 16, 23 and October 30. This first conference will provide us with an opportunity to share information about your child. The second round of conferences will take place in March on Wednesdays. This round of conferences will also include your child.  Report cards will be sent home with January and again on the last day of school in June.

MCAS Dates: Thursday, March 20 and Monday, March 24 for ELA
Friday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 13 for Math. Please mark your calendars.

Star Student: Each week a different student will be selected as the star of the week. This allows us to highlight each child.

Backpacks: Please be sure to label your child’s backpack. Backpacks should be brought to school daily and emptied each afternoon. Please encourage your child to pack his/her backpack the night before school.

Notes: Please remember to send a note if there is a change in after school destination or “typical” routine. No note, means no change.  Also, please send a note or email if there will be a planned absence, or upon the return of an illness.

Field Studies: We have four field studies during the school year. On November 21 we travel to Plimoth Plantation, in January/February we will visit the Harvard-Peabody museum as an extension of our rocks and minerals unit. In the spring we will travel back in time to learn about the early events in the American Revolutions as we explore historical sites in Lexington and Concord and visit the Grout Heard House in Wayland.

Wish List/Supplies: Thank you to all of you who have donated supplies. Throughout the year we will be Kleenex and hand sanitizer. Please periodically check our class blog and monthly newsletter for requests.

I’m looking forward to a great year working with all of you as together we support your child in their third grade learning.
